If a team member is working hard but can’t point to the Annual Initiative their priority supports, they may not "get it" yet. As your company grows, this is a common observation. However, closing that gap is not a one-time conversation. Habit #3 for great managers is about closing that gap through consistent, visible execution.
1. Revisit the Foundation
High-growth teams treat their One Page Strategic Plan (OPSP) as a living document. We recommend revisiting at least one section of your OPSP each quarter. For example, reviewing your Core Values ensures they still reflect your current team culture. When the foundation is clear, the daily work in the software makes more sense. Then present your findings to to the rest of the company. You build trust when the team knows their leadership is reviewing strategy and transparently sharing.
2. Connect the "Why" in 1:1s
The fastest way to see if your team is aligned is to look at their Priorities. During your 1:1s, ask a simple question: "Which Company Priorities or Annual Initiative does this priority support?" If the connection isn't clear in the software, use that moment to coach. Ensuring every individual priority links to a larger Company Priority or Annual Initiative turns a "to-do list" into a measurable contribution.
3. Lead the Conversation
Accountability means owning the outcome, not just the task. As a manager, you are accountable to your team to:
-
Lead the conversation around their priorities.
-
Remove blockers before they slow progress.
-
Support "child priority" owners to ensure they have what they need.
-
Report on progress with transparency.
Make sure your weekly huddle has a Priorities Review section...and the team updates it weekly. By highlighting how the team's work hits company priorities during your huddles, you reinforce that every smart move today leads to a big win tomorrow.
