Weekly Tips & Tricks

Hey there,

This week, we’re focusing on a simple idea you’ll notice everywhere in Align: almost everything has one owner.

Yes, work gets done by teams. Collaboration matters. But progress happens faster when one person is clearly accountable for guiding the outcome.

Responsibility vs. Accountability
These two words get used interchangeably, but they play very different roles.

Accountability means owning the outcome overall.
That person leads the conversation, understands why the priority matters, removes blockers, supports child priority owners, and reports on progress. They guide the team toward the right impact.

Responsibility means owning your individual work.
It is the true feeling of ownership. One task, one owner. When more than one person owns something, no one truly does.

Align is intentionally built around this distinction.

How Align helps reinforce ownership
Here are a few practical ways to use Align to strengthen responsibility and accountability across your team.

  1. Distribute the work
Each person should enter their own Priorities, Tasks, KPIs, etc.. It’s tempting to have one administrator keep everything “clean” and organized. That may look nice, but it doesn’t create ownership. When people enter their own work, they naturally think through the language, priorities, and connections. That mental processing builds commitment you cannot assign.

  2. Use the daily components
Tools like Who What When, Priority Task Build Out, and Daily Huddles quietly reinforce responsibility. When everyone sees their face next to a due date, ownership becomes personal and visible.
Quick tip: make sure everyone uploads a profile photo. It sounds small, but it makes ownership real.

  3. Turn on Alerts
Alerts keep ownership top of mind. Encourage the team to review their individual settings and enable task alerts, huddle alerts, priority alerts, and the weekly task email. Reminders reduce dropped balls and last-minute surprises.
